They have webbed feet and valve-like skin flaps that close over their nose and ears to prevent water from getting in, making them excellent swimmers and divers. They even have fur on the bottom of their feet to keep them warm and provide traction on snow and ice. Their thick, soft fur is layered with a dense undercoat that keeps them warm, and the long hairs of the outercoat are waterproof. North American river otters have a streamlined, flexible body that helps them swim effortlessly through the water and maneuver quickly as they hunt fish and other prey. This play is great fun for the otters, and it is also an important adaptation – it helps them to form bonds, improve their hunting skills, and better their escape techniques if a predator comes around. The North American river otter, a member of the weasel family, is also known as the northern river otter and, like all otters, spends much of its time playing. The afternoon feeding start around 3:00 pm, and is available for guests to watch. A hand-fed diet in the morning and a group scatter feed made up of forage items like lettuce, celery, and cucumbers. We currently have 14 gorillas living in two separate family troops.
