As I said, it’s not as grim nor as dark but I find it refreshing. It’s well written, action packed, and actually something that I could see being featured on the show. This dark force ultimately uses Twilight’s own magic to it’s own end in a desire to destroy Canterlot.Īs I said, I like this story a lot. Twilight becomes corrupted after allowing a dark force to manipulate her and must save her friends. So what does happen when a pony with unlimited power becomes so entrenched in her friendships that she loses touch with what her magic can do? This story explores that concept. This can be seen in the show, this story in particular, and even in day to day life.
Friendship often causes people to behave irrationally. You could consider this as part of their role a royalty and goddesses but another interpretation could be that they are so detached because if they were to make the connections like Twilight has made they would lose themselves in those attachments and their magic may become unstable. If you look at the royal sisters and their personalities you’ll notice that they are aloof and detached from other ponies. Sometimes they involve her going bonkers, others involve her losing control of her magic but the one commonality is that they all are exploring what happens when a mare with unlimited potential forgets that she has that unlimited potential. I have a strong affinity for the grimdark stories featuring Twilight. It’s not quite as grim nor as dark as some of the other things I’ve posted on this blog, but I really think you’ll like it a lot. Between work, being a guild master and various other things it’s been hard to find some time to spend with you, but here I am to share a great story with you. Take care of yourself, and maim your brother. I am walking away knowing that at one point there was truly something special about grimdark MLP and that the stories I featured here were some of the best I and others found.
I didn’t do that work for nothing and I’m not walking away mad.

I’ll, of course, leave the blog up as an archive for you to read and enjoy. Maybe one day I’ll come back and write again, but I wouldn’t expect it. I hate to leave you all hanging, wanting more, but that is how it will be.
I have other things I’m working on that have nothing to do with ponies that I find more enjoyable. This blog was hard to write, and as much as I enjoyed our time together I don’t see myself picking it up again any time soon. Every time I looked at this blog or thought of it I recalled that I would need to review the story again before posting and sometimes that could take me an entire day and I don’t often have a day to set aside and read pony fanfiction that I may end up having no interest in reviewing. It was interested to get a story that ramped up and finished in 8-10 digestible chapters, but once you hit 12 and the story has gone nowhere it’s no longer fun. There are times when things wear out their welcome and so many of those long stories did just that. There are only so many times I can read essentially the same story and pick through to find something special about it before I fail to find it enjoyable and more of a cumbersome job.Īs an aside, the long stories are actually worse.

“But Bender,” you say “what about Silent Ponyville (insert other popular and decently written series here)? That stuff is worth it, right?” Yes! But even those have lost their luster with the flooding of stories in the same vein. The internet has been so flooded by poorly written, poorly thought out grimdark MLP fanfiction that it’s difficult to sort through the crap to find the gold and I honestly don’t have the time or desire to look for something worthwhile. While, at first, I saw some real potential in the creation of something so twisted out of something so pure it has ceased to really be art.
Simply put, I have lost my desire to read and review grimdark fanfiction. I feel like I owe you all an explanation as to why I have not updated this blog in a while.
